On 27 March 2018 the Coroner was notified that permission to appeal the High Court judgement dated 26 January 2018 has been granted. The appeal is listed to be heard on 17 July 2018 at the Royal Courts of Justice.
A Judicial Review hearing was heard by Lord Justice Simon and Mrs Justice Carr on the 6th and 7th December 2017 sitting at the Family and Civil Justice Centre in Birmingham.
The Judicial Review hearing will considered matters arising from the Coroner’s ruling, dated 3 July 2017, on the scope of the Inquests. Lord Justice Simon and Mrs Justice Carr have stated that they will hand down their judgment on 26th January 2018. The ruling will be published on this website.
Application for Judicial Review
On 7th September 2017 a claim for judicial review was made to the Administrative Court. The claim form, lodged on behalf of the families represented by KRW Law, sought a judicial review of the decision on the scope of the Inquests made by the Coroner on 3 July 2017. A Judicial Review hearing was set for 6th and 7th December 2017.
Birmingham Inquests, update September 2017
The pre inquest hearing into the Birmingham pub bombing inquests (1974), that was scheduled for 14 September 2017 at the Birmingham Civil Justice Centre was postponed in light of an application for judicial review.
In light of the judicial review application, the Coroner decided to postpone the pre-inquest hearing that was scheduled to be held in Birmingham in September 2017. Any further dates for preliminary hearings will be posted on the Inquests’ website. In the meantime, work on preparing the inquests in respect of those matters that are agreed to be within scope and which are unaffected by the Judicial Review will continue.
